Easy steps to get a website for yourself or your business…

Naturally we are happy to help you out by setting your domain up for you (drop us a message) as part of our Website Package, though if you have a little bit of time and technical skill you can with relative ease manage it yourself by following our steps below.

All in all allow 30 minutes or so to get setup and registered and up to 24 hours for the domain to go live.

As always we highly recommend the hosting company we use LetsHost.

And that is where we start the process by (depending on your computer) the following steps –

Windows: [Right Click on Link] – [Open Link in new Window] – Position new Letshostbilling.com window side by side with this window.

Mac: [alt] + [Click on Link] – [Open Link in new Window] – Position new Letshostbilling.com window side by side with this window.

We’ll do a search for your preferred domain. I’m using my own domain as the example. This will usually be your business name (registered) or your personal name or blog name that you have chosen (eg. www.kidsintheclouds.ie is a personal blog)

As you can see below the preffered .ie form of domain for Irish businesses is gone (it’s registered to me anyway) so I can setup a second or third or more domain with “socialmediamatters” if I want. This is worth bearing in mind if you have a good business name that you want to protect. By claiming all the domain extensions it means nobody can clone your website for their own gain. (Think of all the counterfeit websites used in scams)

For demonstration purposes lets assume I want the .org version so I select that and [ADD TO CART]

For first time registrations you will also need a hosting package otherwise you have an address but no location for it. Again I have an existing Hosting Package with LetsHost but assume I don’t so like most setting out I only want it for email and a simple blog or small online shop.

I would recommend either the Starter Hosting from €7.95/mo (business or online shop) or the WordPress Hosting from €6.95/mo (for blog or simple information purposes). [ORDER NOW] will add this to your cart.

We’re obviously going to use the Hosting with our new domain so pick that…

Pick your Billing Cycle on the next page – annual is far more economical so lets go with that. For €4.99/yr I’d go with the extra ID Protection.

For .ie domains there is a little more required at this point to protect the integrity of the much sought after .ie extension.

You are asked for your applicant class…

…and the Category Type of your website:

I have selected this as if it was a personal blog in my own name. If you are thinking of setting up a business then go with the Discretionary Name otherwise for established businesses you should fill in your CRO (Companies Registration Office) and or RBN (Registered Business Name).

A comment is obligatory. Again simple and to the point – if discretionary – a comment stating you are exploring the opportunities for a potential business idea  or a personal blog is mostly adequate. The IEDR may come back to you for more clarification but instead of seeing this as an annoyance think of it as protecting your business idea.

Review your Cart and go to Checkout. At this point because I have gone with a .org domain the Checkout is pretty straightforward – simply fill in the information and on you go and make payment.

This information is used to document the legal owner of the website and to provide Account details for your log in to the LetsHost account where you carry out the remainder of the website setup once the domain is active.

We’ll move on to that in the next post. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments, on Twitter or via Facebook.
